THE BOTANICAL FACTORY

2014

Continuing his reflection on narratives and cultural practices, Lee’s The Botanical Factory project departs from The Botanist series and travels the world. For the artist, The Botanist character from his earlier project becomes a native other on the road, discovering the world and disseminating his cultural practices through oral storyrtelling, interaction, and hands-on print-making.

Presented by Art Production Fund in partnership with The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas in 2014, Lee created The Botanical Factory in Las Vegas’ P3Studio, where he was on residence and showcased the process and results of making nature prints by hand. Guests were invited to join Lee in his factory and learn how to make prints using silicone moulded leaves, as he narrated the Polynesian legent of Rua-ta’ata and his uncanny transformation into the ‘uru (breadfruit) tree. Referencing the idea of Las Vegas as an oasis in the middle of the desert, the project explores notions of nature versus culture, migration and the search for riches.
